I stood outside the gates of Blackthorn Keep, waiting for the escort that had been sent to receive me. Instead, the first person who came through the gate was Marcus Blackthorn. For a moment, recognition darkened his face. Then the old arrogance returned, smooth and familiar, as if three years had changed nothing between us. “Sienna?” His gaze moved over my cloak, my traveling dress, the quiet curve of my stomach. “What are you doing here?” He dismounted, and the people behind him followed.

A compartment opened. Inside was a thin black book. Gabriel took it carefully. The cover carried no writing. He opened it. The first page contained a warning. The world below no longer looked like the valley he’d sworn to protect. The ground pulsed with veins of light, rivers of silver snaking between shattered stones. The air shimmered like molten glass, bending and breaking the rain into prisms. And at the center of it all stood the Gate—a colossal arch of fractured crystal half-buried in the mountain. Its surface rippled like water, reflecting skies that didn’t belong to this world.

The symbols flared white, and the sound that ensued was not a sound at all, but rather a deep, old pulse that moved through the atmosphere like a heartbeat. The Gate trembled. Sheets of snow tumbled down from the fractured surrounding it. With a faint silver glow in his eyes, Silas raised a hand. "The key is her." Without her, you can't fight it. I yelled, "Then you'd better tell me how." He looked at me. "Not in this location. Not quite yet. The Gate is more than a doorway. It's a recollection.
