he replies.
I meet his gaze. “And how do you know that?”
“Because the fake one doesn’t hurt,” he says softly. “She doesn’t grieve. She doesn’t bleed.”
My throat tightens.
“Dax,” I say carefully, “are you dangerous?”
He shakes his head immediately. Too quickly.
“No,” he says. “I don’t want anything from you.”
“Then why stay?”
He looks past me again, down the corridor, expression distant.
“Because when the Game dies,” he says, “things like me won’t know where to go.”
