Then her voice cracked through the quiet, so small he almost didn’t hear it.
“You don’t know what he did.”

Rhett’s hand stilled in her hair. His chest tightened, fury rising sharp in his throat. But he forced his voice low, steady.
“Then tell me,” he whispered. “Only if you’re ready. But you don’t ever have to hide from me.”
Her fingers curled into the fabric of his gown, clutching tight. Her body trembled against him, but the words came, jagged and halting.
“He… he broke me down. Made me believe I was nothing. That I’d never get away. That no one would ever want me.” Her voice cracked, breaking into a sob. “And I believed him, Rhett. For so long, I believed him.”
