I could feel her frustration, but I held her back, barely.
“And what if you fall in love with me?” I taunted, eyes narrowing. “Because you already sound like you might.”
His face changed instantly, eyes hardening into ice.
Regret stabbed me in the chest. Ava snapped at me inside my mind, scolding me for pushing too far.
“You forget something, Alera Martinez,” Rex said darkly. “I bought you. I own you.”
He stepped forward, leaning down until his breath brushed my ear.
“Don’t worry. I have no intention of falling for you,” he whispered. “And that’s a promise. Unless you fall first.”
