Big, thick books bound in leather, with gilt-edged pages, texts on war and military theory, encyclopedic tomes on world history, classic literature, poetry. But it’s not a library collected after a lifetime of reading. It is a library that has been purchased for show - Drew’s idea of which books should line the shelves of a military man’s office. He has a similar collection in his own office. Most of the books have never even been opened, eyes have never rested on their words, fingers have never caressed their pages. They are as untouched and virginal as nuns.

He raised his brows while I stared back, wondering what he was talking about. "Think what?" I repeated. "About men being gentlemen means they have an ulterior motive," he responded, and I dropped the glass cup on the table. "It's common among men! They read women like a book, studying them long enough to realise they love being pampered and cared for, and only a gentleman can pull that through, and so they have to act like someone they are not just so they can get what they want," my voice filled with spite and disgust despite trying to hide it.

“Lady Chatterley’s Lover, huh? I have read this one.” Gavin felt a blush on his cheeks, and then wanted to blush for blushing. “It’s a good book,” he said in a hoarse voice. What else would you recommend?” The sales assistant continued selecting books, giving a brief description for each one. “Oh, and we also have some romantic adventure books, like ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson, which focuses more on adventure and pirates.” Jack listened carefully and selected several books with the assistant’s guidance. “I think she’ll like these,” he said, smiling. The sales assistant smiled back, growing a bit curious about the lucky woman who had managed to tie down a confirmed bachelor like Jack Colt.

I know this because I’m following his every movement, and I’m not even sure why. A silver Mercedes-Benz pulls up behind the SUV, and out of it alights a man, not younger than sixty, in a grey suit. The first thing I notice about the newcomer is that he’s fit for a man his age, he stands tall with the aura of a man who shouldn’t be trifled with. His salt and pepper hair and beard are well-groomed, an overall well put man. “Roman,” the man speaks, his face hardened with no life in his eyes. Christian, nonetheless, doesn’t seem to care, as if he knows his anger is greater than whatever the older man must be feeling.

Crap, why didn't I think of that before letting myself be talked into going? Still, it was fun and nothing much really happened, well except for Gabriel going all alpha male on me. I know all about those from the books I read but never expected to see one in the flesh, not here at least. I've always wondered where the women in those books fictitious though they were, found these men. Especially the ones that were based in places like this.

Of course this man had a library that looked like it belonged in an interior magazine spread. A low chandelier hung in the middle of the room above a long solid wood table, a few chairs, one couch in the corner with a folded throw. I walked along the first shelf, letting my fingertips brush the spines. Gold lettering, embossed titles, lettering already faded. The first row was full of classics. Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Dumas. Of course Zane owned a collection of depressed men who liked to write about sin and consequences. Fitting.
