They emerge from a hole in the ground, a dark and menacing opening that seems to be the very gate to the underworld. The Drider, an equally terrifying entity, accompanies them. Its appearance is a grotesque blend of spider and humanoid, with a body covered in dark hair and long, sharp legs that creak with every movement. Its eyes, a bloody red, reflect pure malice and an insatiable thirst for power. Together, Drider and the Skinning of the mind are the embodiment of horror, a sight that could chill the bravest of souls to the bone.

There's a crooked line through his notes that he doesn't seem to notice. He stares at the door they left through. Then, the door gets kicked open. One flat bang, the latch surrendering immediately. Two figures in the frame. The tall one first, red hair catching the light, the kind of face built for walking into rooms like he owns them. Behind him, a second one leans against the doorframe with the mild expression of someone who finds everything mildly amusing. Goblin actually yelps. The red-haired one, Bore, scans the room once. "Who's the Grim Reaper. Come out."

A ghoul—a smoky, semi-corporeal horror with glowing red eyes and clawed hands—materialized from the shadows and slammed into him. He grunted in pain as his back connected hard with the carriage, the breath knocked from his lungs. The cube clattered to the ground but continued its ominous pulse. The ghoul, joined by a second, shambled toward him. The mayor, witnessing this, screamed, and the few townsfolk nearby scattered.

So in their eyes, I was nothing more than a tool to be completely drained of worth. The storm felt as though it were freezing my organs solid, but I summoned the last of my strength, curled my fingers and pushed the car door open again.
