The stench of rot hit me as ghouls wormed up out of the earth, their twisted bodies overflowing over mine. Claws dug deep into my flesh, their teeth snapping against my throat. I thrashed, a half-shift tearing my skin as bristles of fur came through, but the roots coiled tighter, crushing bone and my breath. My wolf roared, but the power faltered. I had no strength or fight. The ghouls' faces pressed up against my own, vacant eyes shining, their jaws wide open to devour me whole— And then a cry pierced the darkness. It didn’t sound human. Neither did it sound like that of a wolf either.

Everyone froze, stunned. Adam jerked his head up, tears still clinging to his cheeks. "What did you say? How could there be no one inside?" The police stepped aside, signaling for everyone to look into the elevator. There were indeed dark red stains at the bottom, but there was no body. "That's great. No one was hurt." "Thank God. That girl must be incredibly lucky." "If there was no one inside, then what was all that blood?" Adam and my coworkers exchanged puzzled looks.

She felt a shiver go down her spine as the ghoul's eyes fixed on her. The ghoul laughed, "Oh, I do not think she will be going anywhere." It shoved Lila aside, sending her crashing into a nearby tree. Lila crumpled to the ground, dazed. The ghoul advanced on Hailey, its clawed hands reaching for her. "You smell...different," it hissed. "Special. I wonder what your blood tastes like?" The ghoul bared its sharp teeth, its face twisted in what seemed like a grin. Before Hailey could react, it moved so quickly that she barely saw it coming. Her shoulder was suddenly ripped apart by a sharp pain.

“I’m sorry, Liam. I don’t know how to sense them because I’ve never seen a ghoul before.” “Damn it,” Liam mutters under his breath, tightening his grip on my shoulder. “We need to get out of here. Fast.” Before I can even process what Liam is saying, the ghouls appear out of nowhere. Their ghostly figures seem to appear and disappear almost like a mirage, and their shrieking fills the air. Fear takes over me, especially when I hear a voice inside of my head say, ‘Purple-eyed wolf. I want to feast on your blood and take your powers!’

With a click, the clasp came undone, and the pendant fell to the floor. In a flash, Zoe’s eyes widened. She grabbed my collar like a madwoman. “Y-You… You didn’t switch fates? You lied to me?!” I looked at her in surprise. “What are you talking about?” Miles suddenly exclaimed, “Ow, Maisie. My neck feels itchy.” He pulled down his collar, exposing his collarbone, and clearly revealed who was actually wearing the demonic fate-swapping lock.

A ghoul—a smoky, semi-corporeal horror with glowing red eyes and clawed hands—materialized from the shadows and slammed into him. He grunted in pain as his back connected hard with the carriage, the breath knocked from his lungs. The cube clattered to the ground but continued its ominous pulse. The ghoul, joined by a second, shambled toward him. The mayor, witnessing this, screamed, and the few townsfolk nearby scattered.

"It's an old dry well. Come with me, Mr. Lloyd. I'll take you there." Ten minutes later, the team geared up and returned to the ruins once again. This time, with Tora guiding them, they no longer wandered aimlessly. He led them straight to an ancient well. It was so deep that they could not see the bottom. The opening was wide enough for a grown man to descend without issue. Tora pointed down into the dark, and he seemed terrified as he said, "This is where I saw a Blood Ghoul crawl out. Mr. Lloyd, when they're not active, Blood Ghouls retreat to underground lairs—places soaked in dark, heavy energy.

She grabbed Selene by instinct, and Selene pulled her into a protective embrace, shifting her own body between Taffy and the entrance. The creatures stared with hollow, lifeless, blank eyes. One of them crawled forward—and the moment its hand touched the soil inside the burrow, it sizzled. Its arm rippled as if something was burning beneath the skin. Then it cracked, broke apart, and collapsed into ash. The ghoul shrieked—a sound so sharp it made Taffy’s ears ring—as it rolled away in agony. The others twitched and clicked, gathering at the entrance. Their shadows swallowed what little light remained, but none of them dared to cross into the burrow.

She hovered her left hand above them quickly to see if she could sense something coming from them and pulled it back to grab a black glove out of her jacket. “Were they by the graves that got raided? I will take these. We just started our investigation. It’s too soon to tell if they’re related to our case, but we will look into them. Thank you for bringing them to our attention.” Coralis knew exactly what these marbles were, but she couldn’t tell what they were to the caretaker. They were not marbles: they were spelled cages containing thick and highly concentrated smoke. If someone breaks any one of them, upon contact with the ambient air, its content will materialize into a ghoul.

She can still see the outside gate since the manor is big and tall. The street is bright and because of the light, she saw a very tall figure emerging from the forest. The figure is like a slender man. The light from the fire gave a proper view of the image. The ghoul is around 2 meters tall, a shape of a man, bald with no face. The hands are like hard stakes similar to their legs. The mouth is big and it shows a lot of sharp teeth. It growled again. Delorah felt fear and she closes the curtain immediately. If the ghouls are smart, they can just easily jump the fire fence and attack the manor. Fortunately, they are not that intelligent to think about that.
