Just beyond it was a small patch of trees and a gravel path. That’s when I saw her. A woman in black leaned against a tree, her posture too casual, too calculated. It was as if she had been waiting for me. She motioned towards me, stopping right in front of me. “You must be Tessa,” she said, pushing off the trunk. She was stunning—tall, dark eyeliner, crimson lips, and a silver pendant that shimmered in the sun. Something about her felt… off. “I’m Raven,” she said with a chilling smile. “Ryder’s ex.”

Caitlin opened her eyes and looked first at Raven’s broken body. The blood lay like a thick red pool around her. Her blue-black hair lay across one cheek like a shawl. She made herself move on. Her gaze swept the room, settled on Ray. He was kneeling beside Raven, examining her to assure himself she was dead. He stood up, backed away two feet, cleared his throat, and spat at the body. He reached behind him for a canvas bag and yanked it open. Gleefully he seized a thick, pointed stake and held it out for her to see.

McLauren leaned back in his chair, swirling the amber liquid in his glass, his eyes narrowing as Mona came into view on the screen. Red hair. Soft face. Out of place. Interesting. "Who the hell is she?" he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. Behind him, the manager shifted nervously, already sweating. "Uh... she's new. Ticket booth." McLauren didn't look at him. "Name." "Mona." Silence. Long. Heavy. McLauren watched the screen, studying the way she smiled, the way she reacted to Kane. The way Kane reacted to her.

"Knowing you're not one for flashy presents, I had the Underboss hit up all the big luxury brands six months ago to get your anniversary present sorted. "Do you like it?" At a glance, I recognized the mini ear studs from the jewelry store, the ones thrown in with the purchase of that fancy green jade necklace. I nearly burst into laughter from sheer frustration, dodging his attempt to adorn me with the studs. I settled onto the armchair, responding to my family's messages in our group chat.

No one knows who Raven is, and the fact that she was known as the killing machine made people in the assassin community assumed her to be a man. Who would have thought that he would be a she?
