The hall of the Grand Jewelry Exhibition was a sea of light. Everywhere you looked, there was the sparkle of gold and the cold fire of diamonds. The walls were lined with velvet, and the air smelled like expensive flowers and the best perfume money could buy. Wealthy people moved through the room like slow, graceful sharks. They spoke in low voices, their eyes darting from one glass case to another, looking for the one piece of art that would make them look more powerful than their neighbors.

The lights made everything glitter like stars. “Travis,” I whispered, staring around. “Why are we in here?” He walked up to one of the cases and called the jeweler. “Can I see that necklace?” he asked, pointing at something behind the glass. I stepped closer and gasped when the man brought it out. It was a diamond necklace. It didn’t look like anything I had ever worn before. The jewels caught the light and looked like drops of ice. I stared at it. “No. No way. Travis, that’s too much.”

Crystal chandeliers dripped from the ceiling like frozen stars, and the soft glow of golden lighting made every piece of jewelry in the room sparkle like it was alive.
