It stretched and grew into the shape of a tiny child, all gold. It looked just like any child, except its eyes were spinning clock faces.

Serenity The flickering light illuminated the dark cell. The walls had brown cobwebs and dust bunnies laid over the floor. I was probably the first prisoner since the Dark Ages. I thought to myself. I curled up on the cold concrete floor, still wearing my undergarments. Alpha Kevin sat across, glaring. His arms were folded over his broad chest, and he was tapping his foot. His aura was suffocating. “Why were your eyes gold and not black? Have you been practicing witchcraft?” He barked.

“I’m already a prisoner.” “Yeah,” he says, almost thoughtfully. He steps around me, his shoulder brushing mine—close enough that I can feel the heat of him. “Right now, your cage is made of gold.” He leans in, his voice dropping to a ghost of a whisper. “Don’t make me paint it black.” And then he walks away. I stand there, watching him go, something tight and sharp twisting in my chest. Gold? He’s completely fucking insane if he thinks there’s anything golden about this.

“Golden Cove is a promising site. The current is slow there, and the water bends around the hillside. Old prospectors used to say that’s where gold settles.” “And the banks are full of horsetail. That usually means the soil is rich in minerals. I’d estimate this deposit holds more than a hundred tons.” A familiar voice rang in my ears, and I suddenly snapped back to myself. I found myself standing at the door of the conference room. The one speaking confidently onstage was Jane Parker, the new intern who had just joined the institute.
