The rodeo announcer tested the PA system. Brandt stirred his soda. Jessie fiddled with her straw. He’d insisted she call him Billy round about the time he’d left her mom. “Whatcha need?” He leaned forward, the portrait of sincerity. “The transmission went out on my truck. It’s at a repair shop here in Gillette, but I’m a couple hundred short on the repair bill.”

Diana Billy rises from his seat. "We should go. There's nothing more we can learn here." Disappointment and frustration course through me, and I have to bite back a string of curses. Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I nod. "Okay. Let's get out of here." Billy's hand lands on my shoulder, warm and reassuring. "Don't worry, kid. We'll catch that bastard." His lips quirk up in a small smile. "They can't run forever."

Chris added in a deep tone. Billy heard the cell phone ring and immediately recognized the caller. He apologized to his father and answered. “Hello, mom!” he said with a smile on his lips. “Yes, I’ve talked to Shawn! To be honest, today I would have preferred to face a hurricane than to talk to him." He looked at his father who was already leaving the office with an unhappy expression on his face. “No, mom, we'll do things as planned. All right, we'll talk more about it tonight.”

Tim turned and glared at Esther, his voice low but furious. The clueless executives, though, started pointing at me, their voices harsh. “You’re Shirley Levitt, right? Don’t bother coming to work tomorrow!” I smirked and shot a challenging look at them. “Really? You’re firing me?” Tim was now completely flustered, scrambling to fix things. “No, no! She’s not fired! Shirley is one of the most capable employees we have!” Joel laughed at the whole thing, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Capable? I’ve known her for six years, and I’ve never seen it. The only thing she’s good at is pretending to be something she’s not.”
