We overheard one of the alphas drunk kids at the party talking about how the lycan king is locked away, and that only the firstborn alphas and the alpha king have the maps to the location where he is locked away. Nobody at the party took the guy seriously, but you know what they say, a drunk man tells no lies. Many people say that the Lycan king is dead. There are many different stories about the Lycan King. The alliance contract, the one that I took years ago and gave to Kaiven. Below it lay another document. One I knew straight away. A marriage contract. My hands began to shake as I read the front page. Lucerian Veyth. The Lycan King. The exact same guy that I was supposed to marry before I left. The same man that I embarrassed in front of everyone. The same man, to whom I had betrayed myself. There was a hush in the room. I raised my gaze to my father. Then my mother. Neither looked away.

“Pretty. Convenient. Wrong.” The hearth fire snapped orange. Normal. Listening. “In human memory, Amara was a rebel queen before she was a bride. The Lycan king did not rescue her. She rescued half his border towns from the First Alpha’s raids before he decided she was either a threat or an answer.” Cassian’s eyes moved to the carving. I watched him from the corner of my eye. “Did you know that version?” I asked quietly. His jaw tightened. “Parts.” Althea continued.

He grinned, pleased with himself, and walked a little closer, hands sliding casually into his pockets like he wasn’t Beta of the most feared Lycan in the realm. “You should,” he said lightly, then tilted his head. “I’m the most fun person in this entire kingdom.” I rolled my eyes but couldn’t hide the smile tugging at my mouth. “I’ll hold you to that.” “Oh, right. Friendly advice,” he said, leaning slightly closer, voice low. “What?” I asked, curious, my steps slowing. “Avoid Isabella at all costs,” he said, eyes sharp, “but even more than that… avoid Lucas.”

That's why I can't seem to understand what happened back there in the woods. Why was my Lycan clamoring for her? Why did my heart swell with a crazy urge to protect her? Why do I wanna rip off Elder Hamilton's mouth for suggesting she gets burnt alongside the captured rogues? Like fucking why? “Maverick,” A voice interrupted my thoughts. It was Elder Hamilton. The oldest and only elder in the Kingdom who could address me with my name and not have his neck snapped instantly. “Yes?” I replied gruffly, feeling irked by his very blunt suggestion of having her burnt alongside those vile creatures.

Taking a deep breath, I tried to steady myself despite the fear coursing through my veins. His red eyes were still fixed on me, and I couldn't help but feel a mix of apprehension and curiosity about this mysterious prince. "Reject the engagement," he repeated, his voice firm and unyielding. "Why should I?" I managed to say, my voice trembling slightly. "Why should I do what you say?" A sinister smile spread across his face, revealing his sharp fangs. "Because I am the next lycan king, and what I say goes. You don't have a choice."

He said indifferently, a slight curiosity to his eyes. "It was not my intention to be intimate with you... I was... not in the right state of mind," I said meekly. If I had guessed correctly I am speaking to the eldest son of the Lycan King, and he is rumored to have killed his mate for being unable to bear a child. No one knows exactly what happened, but I believe he had also rejected his first mate. Dana whimpers in my head at the thought of being rejected by our mate. Given the circumstances, I would gladly accept his rejection if it means escaping death in his hands.

Lucien had the door open before she could ask how he'd unlocked it. She didn't get in. "One more thing," she said. "Before I cross whatever line getting in that car represents." He stopped on the driver's side. Looked at her across the roof. "You said my bloodline outranks every living Lycan." She kept her voice level. "You said the Old Court wants it to legitimise their revival." She held his gaze. "You are Lycan. You came looking for me before the Old Court got here. You found me first." She let that sit for exactly one second. "Why does the Lycan King want me, Lucien? What does your court get out of this?"

"And I don't know what to do. I know I shouldn't panic, but I can't help it. Where did the Lycan King go to?" "To find my father. How is the pack going down?" I asked, my voice filled with peace until he replied back. "We've just received a new record of fifty deaths in just two minutes. They weren't sick. They weren't injured or fired at. They just fell and dropped dead. Not just from a section of the pack. All over. The wolves are dying mysteriously. It seems like we've greatly offended the goddess. I've informed the Gammas to cleanse themselves. We've got to visit the moon tonight." Jace panicked as he explained. I'd never seen this version of him since I arrived at this pack.

The room erupted in chaos as the other lycans rose to their feet, their faces contorted in anger and confusion. I knelt before him, hands clasped in a desperate plea. “Forgive me, sire. It’s my fault. I’ll instantly reject you. I, Tara Morgan, slave of Alpha King Ethan, hereby reject you, Supreme Alpha King Ethan, as my mate—” Before I could finish, a forceful hand slammed against my cheek, leaving my head spinning, ears ringing, and vision blurred. Ethan struck me. “How dare you reject me, you foolish creature!” he growled. Another stinging slap landed on my face, forcing me onto the hard stone floor. “How does a lowly nobody like you dare to reject me?!”
