A Sky Full of Absence
He was barely clinging to life when they got him to the hospital.
In the ICU, I stood by the bed of a man who used to be so full of life, then pierced with tubes, fighting for every breath with the help of oxygen.
"Elias, I'm here," I whispered.
With a struggle, he cracked open his eyes and attempted a smile, his voice a raspy shadow of itself.
"Noelle, am I scaring you looking like this?"
I shook my head, words failing me.
"Noelle, since you've been gone, I've done a lot of thinking. We were crazy about each other once. When our son came into the world, I was on top of the world. I can't pinpoint when things started to slip, how I ended up here.
