He sighed again and grabbed a handful of his dreadlocks with his free hand. “You’re stiff as a noble at his own beheading. Relax. I’m not here to hurt you. Promise.” When I felt his grip loosen, I smacked his hand away and stumbled back. “What the fuck are you?” He raised a brow. “A demon, of course. You summoned me, remember?” My jaw dropped. “You’ve got to be kidding me. A demon? What kind of sick joke is this? Demons don’t exist.”

Paralyzed with fear, she watched as the smoky figure loomed closer, its presence suffocating and terrifying. Around her, her comrades stood in a tense silence, their eyes fixed on the unfolding scene. The demon, moving with an unsettling deliberateness, slowly ventured towards Belle, its form shifting and writhing as it advanced, drawing ever nearer to the trembling woman who had summoned it from the abyss. "A soul of a lowly harlot's offspring, hahaha," the demon intoned, its voice an indistinct amalgamation. Was it male or female? Such distinctions were irrelevant, for demons were once angels, and angels transcend human notions of gender.

Most of the books are romance novels and etiquette guides, useless for my purposes. But tucked at the back, I find a thin volume on supernatural creatures.
