The very earth seemed to groan in agony as the floor of the vault, built on a hollow pocket of the sea cave, finally surrendered to gravity.
The world tilted.
Marcus let out a cry of surprise as the stone beneath him disintegrated. He lunged forward, trying to grab the edge of the safe, but the entire section of the room was sliding into the abyss.
"Dante!" Marcus screamed, his hand outstretched.
Dante reached out, a reflex born of thirty years of loyalty, but Ivy grabbed his belt, hauling him back toward the ventilation shaft.
"The vent! Now!"
The floor vanished. One moment they were standing on solid ground; the next, they were falling into a churning vortex of white water and black rock.
