He blinks. Now he is standing, on his feet, in the middle of a mediaeval village. Cobblestone streets, black smoke in the air. The smell of fire and rusted metal raided his nose. A bell rang, and Roy turned towards the sound. Then everything shifted. Gravity shifted. The world tilts sideways. He falls into the sky, not down but sideways, buildings scattering like feathers as he flies past, unable to control his momentum, villagers going about their lives as if the world hadn’t just betrayed physics for him.

Until now. The flashlight fell from Scott’s hands, hitting the floor with a dull metallic sound. It rolled away, down the stairs, each successive THWANG echoing over and over all the way to the bottom, and it was like watching an old black and white film with no sound, in slow motion: Scott, falling backwards into the room. Jesse, crying out silently, reaching for Scott’s hands, Scott’s mouth working as he fell . . . For several precious seconds Scott Kretch was airborne, and Jesse thought for a moment that maybe Scott could fly.

Then, the ground didn't just shake—it surrendered. The ancient stone of the dais, cracked and overcharged by the First Flame, began to disintegrate beneath us. A roar of shifting earth drowned out the wind as the center of the circle collapsed. We weren't just falling; the earth was swallowing us both, pulling the two anchors of this new power into its dark, cool depths. Gravity became a suggestion. The air rushed past us, smelling of damp earth and old magic. "Aella!" Sol’s voice was a jagged tear in the dark.
