It's less a single narrative and more a tapestry, which some readers find disjointed, but I loved the scope. For a wilder, grittier take, 'The Silence of the Girls' by Pat Barker re-tells the Iliad through Briseis. It's brutal and unflinching, not mythic so much as horrifically human. I've seen some criticism that it's too bleak, but isn't that the point?

Honestly, I'm always on the lookout for more. There's a whole wave of these now, which is fantastic, but the quality can vary. Some feel like they're just checking a 'feminist retelling' box without the narrative heft.

I tried 'The Silence of the Girls' by Pat Barker, and while I appreciated the grim, unflinching look at war from Briseis's perspective, I found the writing a bit cold for my taste. I did stumble on 'The Silence of the Girls' and 'The Women of Troy' by Pat Barker, but those are more Trojan War focused, still circling the major heroes. I’d kill for something from, say, the viewpoint of a lesser nymph caught up in divine politics, or one of the hundreds of river gods. The market seems saturated with Hades and Persephone retellings right now, which are fun, but they've kinda crowded out the weirder, more obscure stories.
