Alpha Cyrus drew his sword from his sheath. My heart was beating, I couldn't die like this. Not now, not here, I had a whole life in front of me. I crawled backward slowly and the guard held me steady. "I find you, Hope Embers, guilty of treason and I hereby sentence you to death by beheading under the full moon in two days time." My heart fell to the pit of my stomach.

"Nice to meet you." James didn't shake his hand. He looked at Eric and then back at me. "How do you know each other?" "Eric tutors Nova in science," I told him. "Eric, this is James Greenwood." Eric nodded politely. "Are you new to town?" James asked Eric. "Yes, I'm an environmentalist." "You're a tree hugger," James said, clearly trying to get a rise from Eric. "Yes," said Eric, unfazed by Jame's rudeness. "But really I work to study, conserve, and protect the Earth. Considering that it's a bit of an important planet."

“She wouldn’t hurt Angelica, would she? I mean, she’s just a child. She can’t possibly understand everything that’s going on.” Ember didn’t answer my question right away. She held out her hand and blew softly into her palm. A small ball of flame sputtered to life, illuminating where we stood in the darkness. The light flickered and waned, dancing as its casted shadows along Ember’s high cheekbones and plump lips.

Doctor Owen gestured for her to sit. Reluctantly, Annie perched on the edge of a sofa, as far from everyone else as possible. Doctor Owen looked at her while really hoping that his words wouldn't break her. His face showed that he really cared about her. "Ember Born witches have existed for thousands of years," Doctor Owen began, settling back into his chair. "They're born with the ability to create, control, and manipulate fire. But it's not just about flames—Ember Born can sense heat signatures, they manipulate temperatures, travel through flames, and they have supernatural hearing. Let's say someone was at the gate, and they whispered. You could hear them if you concentrated."

A moment later, another little pool of warm glow flickered to life. Then another. And then Ember realized— Her nose twitched. No. No way. He lit more candles, three, four, five, each one releasing the same fragrance she used in her own apartment, amber resin, citrus rind and a hint of smoke. Her candle. Her scent. In his apartment. Ember blinked at him through the soft orange halo, “…Seriously?” Ghost straightened, candlelight painting gold across his cheekbones. “The power goes out on this floor a lot.”

Emerald got up and sat beside her grandfather before she hugged him. She knew how happy he was when he met Ace, and now, knowing that there’s a big possibility that Ember is fine, he has mixed emotions about the situation, but worry is evident on his face. “Uncle Dean, we will find Ember no matter what.” Mr. Landers said. “Yes, Grandpa, we will do everything we can. Inside them were dried leaves, powders, and liquids in colors I had never seen before, deep blues, strange golds, and a red so dark it was almost black. "Come in. Sit," Ember said, her voice calm but firm, as though she expected no hesitation. "I just made some green tea, would you like some?" She added before we refused. "It is hot and was made for you two. Do not waste my green tea." "We would love some," I smiled.
