I took a slow sip, letting the fire burn down my throat. "It was adequate," I replied, matching his tone, aiming for casual indifference. "The company was pleasant."
He finally turned. Slowly. Deliberately. The controlled mask was still in place, but beneath it, a fissure ran deep. His eyes, those fathomless blue depths, were no longer icy. They were the dark heart of a blizzard, swirling with fury, jealousy, and a terrifying, predatory intensity. They raked over me, from my damp hair, styled carefully after the cafe to my simple sweater, searching, dissecting, looking for the scent of betrayal, the flush of another man's attention.
