I called out, I walked out into the shadows, I still could not go to the little pool, there was a hint of light yet. She jumped, turning to look at me, her face instantly turning red. I smirked, I wanted to go to her, she was in the shade, and I could, but I need her to come to me. She glanced up, “It’s not dark yet.” “I couldn’t wait,” I replied. “Trees offer good shade.” There has been times when I’m tracked targets, and needed to hide from the sun. Forest provided good coverage. Her breathing paused. “You really didn’t want to see me again?”

Just a brutal, gut-wrenching plunge into terror. I stood in a forest. No, I realized with a chunk of fear in my heart. It wasn’t a forest. It was a graveyard. But not just any graveyard. Not just any graveyard, though. I raised my head up to the sky, and it felt weird to notice the sky above me shine with clouds that seemed as if it moved. The sky didn’t carry the usual colour blue. No. It carried the color of old, dry blood..like ox blood. The trees that were supposed to look normal, like woods, suddenly looked like bones...like a human skeleton. I looked down and what I saw terrified hell out of me. I stumbled backwards and screamed.

*Greenwood Territory — The Deepgroves* The wind that blew heavily through Greenwood. Crystal stood at the edge of the grove, her fingers brushing the bark of an old tree. Her mark still pulsed faintly, silver light dancing under her skin. The forest felt closer now, like it breathed with her. Behind her, Ryder spoke with Veen in low tones. His voice was gravel and steel, the sound of a leader holding too much and refusing to bend beneath it. Crystal turned slightly to watch him.

We stopped a few feet away from them and then the old men spoke those damn words. “Ombra di morte.” (Shadow of death.) The old man said as I took the hood off. I knew what his plan was the moment he wanted me to suddenly assist him with training. never did that at home, why here. The woman looked surprised and the men, well they looked displeased, irritated, aggravated and enraged . Because again they expected the shadow of death to be a man and not a woman. “Liyah.” The old man called out to me.

Flying above the forest, looking down at my ancestral lands, I couldn’t believe how enchanted the woods were. All of the leaves were bright green, a vibrant emerald that caught the sun’s rays and dazzled, the leaves dancing in the air. The patches of grass I could see between the thick, brown trunks of the trees were also that same bright green color. Everything looked healthy and alive, which surprised me a little since the evilness of Verina Crow had so quickly blackened and killed the part of my forest in Montana that she’d touched.
