Something chosen. “They did,” I said. “The ones who trained me. They said I was meant to protect this world from ruin.”

She slightly nodded, hiding her flushed face with a small smile on her lips. "That's great, then." Alaric let out a deep breath as if he achieved something. "Are you going to continue telling me about this or not?" She asked which surprised Alaric. For the first time, Amethysta initiated the conversation. Alaric chuckled a little before saying, "They're said to be guardians of the forests, protectors of nature, and skilled in the arts of healing and enchantment." "Do they really exist?" Amethysta asked, her eyes sparkling like a kid.

The moment Cenam opened his mouth Sethlzaar knew he was going to be involved in a never ending story. "You met Ulkiniki," Alsipin said suddenly, before Cenam spoke. Sethlzaar turned a puzzled look on him. "Ulk—what?" "Ulkiniki," Alsipin clarified. "The guardian of the forest. How did you survive it? No one is known to survive it. Do the Fathers know?" He made his way to join them on Cenam's bed, taking an interest Sethlzaar had never known the boy capable of, although it was understandable. After all, it seemed it had something to do with what he was sure was one of the boy's many stories.

From the far edge of the clearing, shadows peeled themselves from the trees. Humanoid—but wrong. Too tall. Limbs jointed like insects. Eyes burning faintly silver in the dark. Guardians. The forest whispered around them. Damascus had never seen anything like it. He was used to fighting other dragons and wolves but this? Was far outside of his comfort zone.

As we entered the forest, the air became warm and fragrant. Massive ancient trees towered above us, their emerald leaves filtering the morning sunlight into shimmering ribbons of gold. Birds sang high in the branches. Crystal-clear streams flowed beside the path. For a brief moment, it felt as though the war had never existed. Nerina smiled softly. "The Earth Guardian's domain has always been the most beautiful." Aurel nodded. "The forest itself is alive." "It protects those with pure hearts." Magnus looked around uneasily. "I still don't trust a forest that watches me."

I asked in disbelief. “They tried to communicate with the spirit, but it is no longer on this earthly plane,” Elijah explained sadly. “Now they’ve returned to their lairs until the gods appoint a new guardian.
