Another lunged from behind, I caught it midair, crushed its neck, felt nothing. Fiona fought beside me, silent and deadly. Through the chaos, Gwen knelt by the shimmer, her hands pressed to the ground. Blood dripped from her palms, and the veil pulsed brighter. “She’s holding it open,” Fiona shouted. “For him!” “No,” Gwen gasped. “I’m holding it *back!*” Then the air split again and Rowan stepped through. He looked almost calm, robes torn, eyes black with power. “Son of Whiteclaw,” he said. “Still chasing ghosts.”

Gwen shouts, sprinting in the opposite direction. Being in my larger dragon form, it takes me a moment to maneuver around to face her. By the time I am face to face with Gwen, I see she has picked up a stray sword from the ground and has already pierced Prince Geoffrey. Geoffrey’s hands that were placed on Gwen’s shoulders trying to stop her leaving fall limp at his sides as he crumples to the ground.

I held the crystal out to my family and saw the force of their magic enter it and turn the star into a prism rainbow of magic. "Our combined power will guard and watch over you," I said. "And when the day comes this world is done, you will finally know real peace." Gwynn hesitated. "My lord," Galleytrot spoke up. "Will you hear me?" Gwynn nodded. "I have never met those with such honor, to rival even the Sidhe." He bowed to us, shaggy head so close to the ground his nose tickled the grass. "They will do as they say and not forsake us."

Shockingly, Severin had managed to secure one for himself! The shock that Oskar felt was laced with a tinge of envy. He sighed, lamenting to himself that he felt overshadowed by Severin's incredible luck despite years and years of dedicated training. My stomach got tied up in knots as my feet left the ground. He lifted me effortlessly and placed me on the horse's saddle. The beast moved under me and I yelped. I looked for anything to grab and I found its reins. I pulled on it as the beast kept moving. The world kept tilting around me.

I reach down to catch her, to keep her in this place, but she is gone, only the smell of sulfur, sweat, and soiled rags filling the space where she once stood. _______ Gwain and Percival were waiting for me outside the tavern, their faces noticeably blank.
