The Pack's Emissary
The Mer soldiers spoke to Niarthen, and he back, their faces shifting into amusement, and their eyes slipping sideways glances at Lyric, who cringed, her shriek of fear echoing in her mind like a humiliating taunt.
Anyone would have shrieked, she told herself. Rats were, well, rats, after all, and this rat was… wrong. As her initial instinctive fright faded, Lyric stared at the rat in fascination. It looked very healthy other than its broken back - it was fat, and its fur was sleek – and yet its aggression and determination were very unnatural.
“It’s not rotting away,” she said. “It’s not like the sheep. It’s all shiny and… well, healthy looking.”
