I placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, feeling the crisp cotton of his shirt. “Kwame, wake up.” He grunted, a deep, unconscious sound, and his hand twitched as if to swat away a fly. He burrowed his face deeper into the duvet, and the snoring stuttered before resuming with renewed vigor.

Samantha leaned closer, practically hovering, her excitement making me smile despite myself. She picked up the sealed bag, turning it over in her hands before noticing a small note attached. She unfolded it and read aloud, her voice teasing and a little dramatic: “Sorry for overworking you last night. I got some pills and food for you. Signed, D.” I froze, my heart stuttering in my chest. The blush that had been creeping up my neck surged hot across my cheeks, and I snatched the note from her hands, feeling my fingers tremble just slightly. My pulse raced, a strange, thrilling mix of surprise, delight, and something I couldn’t quite name.

We opened the latch and there was a ladder leading to the ground. We entered the space and walked down the path, it was the only tunnel until we reached a huge space. Eight hours wearily drifted by. Soon JC would see land. Then the announcement, for which he had dreaded, came about unexpectedly from the P.A. system. There was a crackle and the pilot’s voice rose above the din. “May I have your attention, please?.. I'm sorry to announce that we are behind schedule. Unexpectedly the tower told us to hold on . . . and that we will be landing soon. This is due to some unavoidable circumstance . . . The temperature outside is 32º centigrade. Don't hesitate to ask the stewardesses for anything. Please make yourself comfortable. Thank you.”

We would face the impending threat as one, standing tall with our pack on the line and our future hanging in the balance. As I left the meeting room that night, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Though my emotional attachment to my Luna might be lacking, our pack's resolve was solidifying.
