So many things running around in her mind, but she really didn’t know enough about the situation to be happy either way. Through the years, you heard about vampires, but you never thought they were real. Books on top of books were written about them, yet you never knew what was real and what was fake. Too many thoughts and having so many emotions had given her a massive headache. Pumpkin moved off her lap and she sighed. Finally, she stood and went into the kitchen to get a drink, maybe a snack. As she moved into the kitchen, she would have sworn she heard something scratching the back door. No dogs lived near her house, but then again, you never knew when someone bought a new pet.

Caraline covered her face with both hands. She didn't want to look at the television, but the movie still came through and gave her goosebumps. The woman scanned the surroundings, which were quiet and poorly lit.

“It's time to wake up, sweetie...” The sun was beginning to rise, but the light didn't bring comfort. It only clarified the nightmare. I looked at the eye again. The pupil didn't dilate or contract. It remained a fixed, black pinprick in a sea of terrifying blue. As my eyes adjusted, I realized the skin around the eye didn't look like skin at all. It looked like wet parchment stretched too tightly over a frame that didn't quite fit. I remembered the "rules" people joked about in horror movies. Don't go outside. Don't answer the door. But what do you do when the monster is already in the hallway, wearing your father’s throat like a stolen garment?
