Sky leaned on the wall, crossing his arms to his chest as he looked at my daughters with interest. “You mean Jack of all trade?” He smirked, but his eyebrows raised when they shook their heads. “Mommy of all trade. Mommy does everything to earn money,” Lyra Helene gasped, pulling lacy G-string underwear from the shopping bag. “What is this?” Sky burst into laughter, raising his hand as he massaged his forehead. “Give that to mommy. I’d love to see her in that.” Twitching her lips as her widened eyes looked at the underwear, my stunned daughter gave it to me.

If the situation with Darien hadn’t happened he would have probably gone there by now. He looked at the event posting again. It was for an early Halloween event and the business would be open in the evening for the first time. Customers were encouraged to come in appropriate fancy dress and all products would be horror themed. Zach was intrigued. He could invite Darien to it. Fancy dress would mean Darien could have a disguise and the affordable product prices meant that he could pay this time. It was perfect. The date was the following week on Friday. He would have to see if it aligned with Darien’s schedule. He checked a few more posts and picked up another half read Damien Black book.

The horizon was a jagged smear of charcoal gray and bruised violet. For three years, I had walked toward it, guided by nothing but the rumors whispered in the hushed, terrified voices of dying scavengers. They spoke of a place that held the line, a fortress of humanity amidst the rotting sprawl of the walking dead. They called it "Haven."

"This place isn't like the living world. Skincare and makeup products are scarce, and only the rich can afford them. "In our horror game, the cosmetics are provided by the studio, but because our instance performs so poorly, our budget is tiny. That's why our makeup never looks good and fails to draw in viewers." I caught a word in her explanation. "Viewers?" She gave a small clap. "Exactly. The live comments in horror games aren't from humans—they come from ghosts watching the stream. It's the same as how you humans watch reality shows." I raised a brow. "So there are a lot of ghosts tuning in?"

“Let’s go? Conrad is waiting outside.” They already know Conrad and are close to him. “Mummy, a superhero saved me earlier.” Skye told. “What happened? How did he save you?” “I went out to chase him. I tripped, but I wasn’t hurt because he was suddenly next to me. I think he flew to save me. I want to hug him, Mummy!” When we came out of the parking lot, I saw Conrad and Lance, they were wearing mascot costumes, which looked exactly like the ones Skye and Sunny were talking about. From where we were, they were in a side view.

The memory of that night is seared into her mind, a haunting reminder of how quickly happiness can turn to despair. The evening began like any other. The sky was a deep indigo, the stars twinkling overhead as a gentle breeze rustled the leaves. Aqua and her parents were gathered in their cozy living room, the fireplace crackling warmly. Zara was reading a story aloud, her soothing voice weaving magic into the air, while Milak playfully tussled Aqua's hair, making her giggle.

I get in the car with Skye and feel like there is more to this necklace than she’s telling me, but it’s a family heirloom and I am sure I’ll know in time. Skye and I wait nervously as the sun begins to set and we excuse ourselves for the night. We set the bed up to make it appear as though we are sleep and put our clothes with our scent in the bed as well. We quickly dress and do our make up before Xander mind links us letting us know he is waiting.

Drax, made from wild fungi and ethanol, was banned within the city limits but could be legally purchased and consumed in the Drock. Mother’s message was particularly relevant today, as my age now permitted me entry. Her second message was not to take unnecessary risks on the ice peaks I planned to climb, a message she knew I always ignored. The third was one I had received continually since my early childhood: “Skye, do not, under any circumstances, exercise your powers and bring attention to yourself.” I had asked why many times, only to receive the same answer. “Because I forbid it.” Or, as I grew older, “Because we have a special ability that can be dangerous and must be concealed.”

Just Ray stops laughing, wipes the red honey off his lips with his shirt, and moves around the metallic cave, trying to find something. “I’m not taking you—” “Why not!?” “I am not getting killed,” Just Ray shouted. “Just Ray, do not fret. No one will kill you,” I promised. “We will keep you alive forever, your honey is wonderful!” He eyed me suspiciously and moved piles of his treasures to the side, useless things until he found a life-saver. It’s black with various patches sewn in to keep it together, the metal rusting, the handle made of wood, and he rubs a strange substance on it to get it to open up.

That maybe, in the future he wants to work on a comic company. But, if you would look closely, Landon's sketches are about his schoolmate's death. He detailed everything, from their favorite clothes, to the way they will die. It is too gruesome for a fourteen-year-old boy like him. What he didn't know is that somebody's watching him from outside his window. A man wearing a black hoodie and baseball cap. This man stare at him curiously; studying him, and learning everything about him. This man knows the sadness that Landon is going through, and he means to do something about it.
