Closed the book with his other hand-cover snapping shut with authority. She rode him one more time, skin slick, body trembling, pulses crashing as she came again-slow, powerful, echoing under the hush of books. Most of Nina's books in Maria's collection were general fiction, full of suspense, desire, longing, crimes, and thrilling scenes. "Got anything left to sweet-talk her with? Or are you planning the hundredth proposal?" They all burst out laughing. They were right. I had prepared ninety-nine proposals just to make Justine happy. For three years, I kept trying, never backing down. But now, I had nothing left. My mother's eyes welled up. "Get out of here, you little pricks!" But they barely noticed, pulling a confidentiality agreement I'd signed from my bag. They laughed, showing it around like it was a treasure. "Look, he's joining a medical research project, and he'll have to work in a secret facility for ten years."

Sprinted to the door, I pulled it open, not expecting it to open, but it did, causing my heart to swell in joy. Ambling to the shelf, my eyes darted round the various book covers. Fiction was my favorite book to read because the best thing about reading was to be able to escape from your life, to be able to read hundreds or even thousands of other lives. Non-fiction does not have that power, it does not change you the way fiction does. To me, if you are not affected somehow, even if it is the slightest change, you are not reading the right book. I would love to think that every novel I have read has become a part of me and created who I am in a sense.

I read for an hour while she listens without moving, just soaking in the story. When I finish a chapter, she speaks for the first time in an hour. "I used to love stories," she says softly. "Before everything went wrong, I used to imagine myself in them: the heroine who gets saved, who finds happiness." "You can still find happiness," I say. She laughs, and it sounds bitter. "How? "Do you know what this book’s about?" I glanced at the title again, pretending to think. "A family, right? Something about poverty and resilience?" She nodded, seeming a bit surprised though she had found the book in the beach house, probably assuming I've never read it. "It’s about overcoming tough beginnings and finding beauty in broken places. It’s sad but also hopeful." Her voice softened and she looked thoughtful.
