"You don't remember me. And I'm too old for them, but... Can you tell me a bedtime story? About anything." His daddy didn't laugh, ridicule him or hang up. There was a strange sound from the other end of the line before the man spoke quietly. "... course I'll tell you a bedtime story. Anytime." (If he wasn't so young and overwhelmed, he would've noticed how much of a struggle each word as.) "... upon a time, there was a brave pilot, who crash-landed in the desert and met a strange but kind boy. ... boy came from a planet far away ..." (1)

This time, he said to me the story about a girl who is always looking in the positive side of each story even if her life is full of mess. "Father?" I called his attention after he finished the story. [Yes?]

he said softly. He sat on the edge of the bed, his voice low and steady as he began. The story wasn’t anything complicated. Just something simple. Something about a wolf who got lost and found his way back home. But the way he told it— The way the kids listened— It did something to the room. Something I wasn’t ready to name. As Skylar squatted down in bed, laughing at their tiredness, Andrew and Anna also sat up, resting on their pillows.

“What’s wrong, honey? Something’s wrong, I can tell in your voice. It’s all tight the way you get. Did something happen at work? Are you overtired? I know how independent you like to be, but it is okay to ask for help. You know I will try to help in any way I can.” “Mom, mom. Enough. It’s okay. Yeah, I’m working hard. I probably didn’t sleep well last night.” Juliette shook her head that she was using that one again. She had in fact slept well the night before. She’d taken a long bath and gone to bed early. Louis had asked that she leave a dinner that he could just set out since he was having a few people over for drinks. Ugh. That reminded her of his story about the girl the night before. S

"Helping out by reading to her every night?" Adrian's expression darkened. "It's not every night." I said nothing. He looked away.
