For an instant he froze, unsure how to proceed. Then he realized that he had to defend himself. He raised his hands, muttering the words of a spell. He hoped to conjure lightning; it was one of the few spells with which he’d had success. Energy rushed through him, and arcing, wildly flashing bolts flared toward the trio.
