Distancing the phone from my ear, I winced then placed it back but I was glad to hear her voice.
This unfamiliar environment made me realize she’s been the closest thing to ‘family’ for me, and that was me saying it.
“But I dropped a text earlier.”
“What text?” She asked.
Checking our chat, I noticed I hadn't clicked the send button, and I puffed.
“Oh, I got, um, distracted.”
“By what or who, huh?” Zoey teased, and that wicked heat crawled up my cheeks as I collapsed on the bed.
“There's nothing to know here. He's old with a cane, has bad breath with a permanent poker face, and loves barking orders like the grumpy old man that he is.” I exaggerated.
