My breath catches and I can't seem to move. Before I can respond, I feel him behind me.
I didn’t even hear him come in.
“Yeah… we can’t leave him alone,” Wellington says softly, his voice lower than I have ever heard it. “But he’s still playing. He can come later.”
I don’t want to let her go. Every part of me refuses. But somehow… I do when he reaches for her and she leans towards him.
I let him take her and stand close, watching as he holds her carefully, like she is something fragile. His big hand moves slowly over her back, gentle, steady… comforting.
