Savannah says. “Get it ready,” I say as Piper comes over and hooks Charlie up to a machine so we can see if he has any heart activity. Normally, we’d be able to hear it, but right now, there are too many people in the room, too much adrenaline, and too much blood pumping in my ears for me to hear it. When they’re both ready, I look at Savannah. “On three, ready?”

Color starts creeping back into his face. The doctor checks his blood pressure next, frowning at the reading. "One-forty over ninety. Too high." He shines the light in Hayden's eyes again. "Pupils equal and reactive. Good." He listens to Hayden's chest longer this time, his stethoscope moving in careful patterns. "Any history of heart issues?" Dr. Grant asks me, since Hayden's too winded to speak. "Broken heart syndrome," I say quickly. "He was diagnosed recently. Stress-induced. He's on meds for it."

His eyes were open but rolled back, showing mostly white. "How long?" I asked. "Hour and seventeen minutes," Marina said, moving to check his monitors with hands that still shook a little. "He should be dead. His heart rate—" She pointed at the monitor. 200 beats per minute. The readout showed it had been that way for over an hour. "That's not possible," I said. "I know. But we checked. Different monitors, manual count—it's real. His heart's been sprinting for an hour straight. It should have—" She stopped, swallowed. "Any other kid would be dead. But somehow he’s still kicking."

"I'm tired and don't want to move." Caroline nodded. "Okay, wait here for me." "Sure." Caroline entered the department and quickly completed her checkup, receiving the doctor's results in less than ten minutes. Seeing her return, Paige immediately stood up and asked, "How did it go? Is everything okay?" Caroline shook her head. "I'm fine, except for a slight irregular heartbeat. I just need more rest." She then pondered why she had experienced sudden chest pain that morning.

the woman said softly. Sophia flipped to another page in the file and continued. “Next, we will perform an electrocardiogram—an ECG. This will help us see how your heart is working. Since you mentioned that your heartbeat sometimes feels too fast, we need to make sure your heart rhythm is normal.” The woman’s hands tightened on her lap. “Does that mean I could have a heart problem?” Sophia gave her a reassuring look. “It’s possible, but we won’t know until we run the tests. It could also be stress, dehydration, or something minor. We just need to be sure.”

She smiled at him. Her hand gripped him slightly harder, and he sighed. His monitor, though, was going a little bit faster. She looked up at it and knew that it could be a problem. “You have to calm down your heartbeat, or you will bring the entire floor into the room.” She said softly. “Slow your breathing down. Take long breaths in and then as long to let them out. You do can that.”

I definitely couldn’t dwell on that at the moment. Breathing deeply seemed to be helping. I checked my heart rate again and saw that it was falling. Normally, my resting heartbeat is slow, like 50 bpm, so it had been working a lot harder than usual. I was glad I hadn’t tried to take Eliza’s exact footage and stick it in Cadence’s mind without building it from my own memory because who knows what that might’ve done to me.
