And finally, Joon, the childhood friend whose loyalty hides a mess of unspoken feelings.

What I love about them is how their flaws feel so human—Mia's stubbornness, Leo's tendency to overgive, Joon's passive-aggressive humor. The way their lives intertwine makes the drama feel organic, not forced. Just finished my second read of 'Beating Hearts' and I'm still caught on the relationship between Leo and Marina. Leo's whole journey from this cynical ambulance chaser to someone genuinely haunted by a case is the spine of the book, but Marina complicates everything. She’s not just a victim’s sister seeking closure; her quiet persistence and the secrets she keeps force Leo to question his own detachment.

Then you have Detective Alvez, who serves as this grounded, often frustrated counterpoint to Leo's more intuitive, messy methods. Their clashes over procedure versus instinct drive a lot of the middle section. I’d argue the victim, Sarah Vance, is a key character too, even though she’s gone. The dynamic between Leo and his estranged father, shown in those brief, tense phone calls, adds a layer of personal stakes that made the professional obsession hit harder for me. The ending hinges on a confession from a character you’ve mostly seen through others' eyes, which was a brave choice.
