I watch him sit up on the bed looking at me like I have grown two heads. "Who are you? And….. what are you doing in my bed?" I ask him quickly and stammer a bit. Because of the hangover, my brain is hazy now. I can't collect anything about this guy. But, My heartbeat is fast. Beating ten times faster than its normal speed. I'm feeling like I'm going to get a heart attack soon. Why is it acting like this? What happens to my heart? I watch him shuffle off the bed and walk in my direction.

I saw it. The heartbeat. Fast and furious and alive. Something cracked inside my chest. Something I'd been holding together since the moment I signed that contract. Tears slid down my temples into my hair. I didn't wipe them away. "The heartbeat is strong," Dr. Hayes said. "Faster than typical for four weeks, but —" She tilted her head. "But there's something else." "What?" Kael's voice was rough. Dr. Hayes zoomed in. The image blurred, then sharpened.

“Yes.” He nods and begins to cut away the shirt while I still pump his chest. As the scissors reach where my hands are I quickly sit back to allow him to quickly open the shirt and then place the first pad to the center of his chest. The second is placed on his side and the machine begins to search for a heartbeat. I hold my breath as I sit on my heels waiting for the machine to finish the check. “Heart rhythm not found, preparing to shock. Clear. Delivering shock.”

But the moment I reached for his pulse, my heart skipped a beat. His heart rate was dangerously high, beating erratically in a way that was both unsettling and dangerous. I immediately pressed the button to alert the nurses, my mind racing with possibilities. I had seen this before—this kind of irregularity could be a sign of an impending stroke, or worse, a heart attack. But no, this couldn’t be happening. Not now. "James," I said, my voice firm despite the panic starting to build in my chest. "I need you to focus on me. Breathe slowly. I need to get some readings."

With that, he ruffled my hair, smiling brightly. I nodded in response. He looked at me pitifully again. I bit on my lips in embarrassment. I didn’t know why, but I wanted to run away from this place. I felt suffocated. I said and chuckled. "You said you didn't feel anything for him. So that means you do know what you should have felt if you were in love with him.
