So far he had a big love heart with my name in it over his left peck. I had then drawn a really bad version of roses and vines around it to go with the ones on his arm. There were also ‘Don’t mess with Ada’, ‘Ada is queen’, ‘Ada forever’ as well and some daisies… well, my bad version of daisies. I really am not that good at drawing, but I try.

"What does your new friend look like, Heidi?" Heidi proudly lifted her drawing. It was a crude, childish sketch of a very tall figure standing between two giant green trees. The figure was colored completely in dark gray and black crayons, but the most unsettling part was the face. Heidi had used a bright yellow crayon to draw two massive, perfectly round circles for the eyes.

Just above his jeans, to the left, where muscle dips into that dangerous V. Exactly where my eyes always go. And there it is. I know that image. I drew that image. A crooked little heart. A badly scrawled Luca. The same stupid, intimate sketch I traced into the steam on his mirror months ago, never thinking it would last longer than the fog on glass.

She stood before the wall of drawings, brushing the empty corner with her finger. “If not,” she murmured to herself, “I am still whole.” James arrived, setting down his bag. He heard the words and smiled faintly—proud. Ethan came in cheerfully. “Mom, Dad,” he said, “I know what to put in the corner now.” Emma and James exchanged a glance. “With what?” Emma asked. Ethan pointed at his smaller drawing. “With a heart,” he said with certainty. “If there’s a baby, they can use it. If not, it’s still there.”

He plopped a crayon drawing into Amiriam’s lap. “This is our family,” he declared proudly. Amiriam smiled. The figures were rough, but recognizable—Luke with long arms, herself with curly hair, James smiling with a crown on his head, and two heart shapes between them. Sometimes children knew exactly how to express the things that adults couldn't manage to ask.

His handsome face pressed close to Scarlet's. "Scarlet, how is your health?" He asked. His tone was filled with concern, and the air of confidence clouded him. Scarlet felt uncomfortable in her heart. She rubbed her chest and tried her best to keep a straight face. "I'm okay." She said. Then she opened her bag and brought out the invitation cards her parents gave her this morning. Klaus took one of the golden cards from her, and a smile bloomed on his face. "You brought me a gift?" He asked, unable to hide his excitement.

then it came. A heartbeat. Tiny, regular, rapid rhythm. Clear, like drumsticks struck too fast—but steady. As if a tiny motor beat inside. A sign of life. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. I can't read a word of that book. But a drawing of a heart is a heart, and the heart in those pages was wrong. Too big for the chest it sat in. Ringed around its middle with something the maker had pressed in heavier ink, the thing armored under its own skin.

He stared at the monitor through the open door—Theo's heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, all rendered in green lines that jumped and settled like the telemetry from a car he couldn't drive. Beep. Beep. Beep. Not the clean spike of a racing heartbeat. The messy, biological rhythm of a body trying to remember how to be alive. Arthur hated hospitals. The smell, specifically—that particular combination of floor wax and decay that no amount of ventilation could remove. It reminded him of their mother, who had died slowly in a room like Theo's, surrounded by machines that measured her departure in incremental silence.
