JUNIPER’S POV: Leaving Hiram isn’t easy—I never thought it would be, but it is worse than I imagined. Each day I wake up feels like a chore to drag myself out of bed. Sometimes I try to check on him, but then I remember I have him blocked on everything. “Juniper, answer the question.” Miss. Tatiana’s voice cuts through the haze in my head, and I look up to see the entire class staring at me. I have no clue what she asked, and to add to it, I have been declining in school over the past few weeks.

Juniper “Hi Jasmine” he said with a nod acknowledging her presence making me look at him in surprise that he knew her name. “Hi, we haven’t really seen you around school lately.” She said softly. “Yeah, I was just busy with some personal stuff” he answered politely. “Oh okay, welcome back though” she replied with a weak smile seeming nervous. “Thanks. Anyways I stopped by to talk to juniper and also invite you guys to the party I’m throwing at my house today” he continued with a blank expression on his face.

With the last bit of strength left in me, I forced my eyes open—just enough to see. There, staring back at me, was a pair of deep, hazel eyes. She spoke softly, “We are one and the same. Hi, I’m Juniper… and you are me.” ​

Juniper pressed herself against the wall, her phone clenched tightly in her fist. Her fingers trembled as she typed a message. Juniper: Someone’s here. Where are you? Seconds passed. Then her phone vibrated. Adrian: Stay where you are. I’m coming. A cold chill slid down her spine. She didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. And then— A shadow passed by the office door.

As I’m getting coffee ready my phone dings, and when I open the notification on the screen it’s a text from Juniper. Juniper: Thanks. I don’t want anything for my birthday. You know I don’t like celebrating it. Me: Don’t really care, Junie bear. I got you a present and I have a surprise for you. I’ll be in my usual parking spot. The three dots appear, then stop, then appear again. This cycles on for a few minutes, and I know that she’s probably cussing me out and telling me off in each one of those text messages she’s erasing. I can’t help but laugh when finally, the message comes through.

Juniper stared at Hailey in shock, not daring to believe it either. "Auntie, don't worry. I'm only returning to my hometown to meet my father. I won't disturb your lives." Hailey spoke in an understanding tone, afraid that Juniper would be angry. After a few seconds of confusion, Juniper's eyes became gentle as she put down her bag and held Hailey's hand, "Don't be afraid, I don't mind your existence. On the contrary, I feel happy for your father. We are very happy that you can return to his side."

"Ignore her. Torin!" A younger man with sandy hair and a friendly face jogs over. He looks much more "human" than the others, though he still has that same athletic build. "This is Torin," Alaric says. "He’s my... assistant. He will show you to your room and help you set up your plants." "Hey there," Torin says with a lopsided grin. "Don't mind the neighbors. They haven't had their coffee yet." Juniper likes Torin immediately. He feels safe. She follows him into the house, but as she crosses the threshold, she stops.

These imaginations crossed Juniper's mind before, but Megan's insult had mercilessly crushed her little world alongside all her imaginations about her late father. When Juniper was turning and tossing in bed, Selena was sitting on the sofa in the living room, clutching her phone. Juniper does not have a father. Where should I get a father figure for her?
