On a Saturday morning two weeks after Simon leaves me fighting tears–unsuccessfully–outside the departure area, I’m sitting at the kitchen island, on a video call with Nicki. “What’s that on your neck?” she asks, making a gesture towards her own neck. I reach for my neck and raise my brow. “Like what?” “Like a hickey.” Nicki’s eyebrows pull together as she moves closer. “Wait…actually that looks more like a bite mark.” She sits back and wiggles her brow at me. “I suppose you are not taking it slow this time, uh?”

Nick pulls me into a hug, and I hear a low growl behind me. Nick pulls back and looks at my face, giving me a smile. He then turns and holds out his hand to Liam, “You must be Liam.” Nick says with a chuckle. Liam begrudgingly takes Nicks hand and gives it a quick shake. Liam sniffs the air then looks at me confused. I’m not sure why, but I just shrug. “Where’s Hazel?” I ask, he smiles, “She’ll be here soon, she drove the van.”

He coaxed me. I couldn't deny his words. Nick was waiting for me to speak, so I finally opened my mouth. "He's... a close friend of mine." "Oh, you have a close friend besides me?" Nick looked surprised but closed his mouth as soon as he saw my piercing gaze. "Sorry, go on. What are you worried about this close friend of yours? Is he that protective guy you told me about? If I'm not mistaken... he's the one who has a younger sister and only lives alone."

Hiding his smile, Nick held unto his heart, “What do you mean by chocolate man? I think we are closer than that now. You can call me Uncle Nick.” Nate shared a look with his mother before nodding, “Okay. Uncle Nick.” Nita’s gaze rotated between them before settling on Nate’s. “No problem, my baby. Mummy is fine. Thank you.” “You’re welcome, mummy.” He continued his meal as if the whole conversation didn’t take place. Nita was about to continue her meal when a hand patted her back, “Sorry dear. If anything is wrong you can always tell me. It’s not like I am a stranger to you, unlike someone I know.” He didn’t hide the glare he sent towards Nick.

When I started work, I got a message from Nick, "Good morning." There's some positive vibe! I replied, "morning." And called him. He attended the call and said, "Hello?" “Know him how?” “Well, you know who he is.” “Sofi, I swear, if you make me play this guessing game, I’m hanging up.” I pressed my lips together, holding back a laugh. “Archie Garland.” Silence. “Maddie?” Nothing. “Hello? Did the call—?” A scream pierced my eardrums. “TELL ME YOU’RE NOT KIDDING! I SWEAR TO GOD, SOFI, IF THIS IS A JOKE, I WILL KILL YOU! ARCHIE GARLAND! HOW THE HELL IS ARCHIE GARLAND YOUR NEIGHBOR?”
