I followed Dax from the truck, leaving Stripes to brood in the dark corner, as I started the ascent to Hemlock’s office. I was so tense when I arrived at the top of the Base that my legs were refusing to move. I shuffled into position before the cold, bare wall opposite Hemlock's desk, but his steely gaze trained on me seemed even colder still. “I heard you got into some sort of crash” Hemlock started, then twined his fingers together and leant forwards “you distracted Stripes and Scorpio died.” I nodded slowly, trying to keep quiet so I wouldn’t say anything to anger him.

I slipped the lock out of the hinge and flipped open the top compartment. My lips parted as half my breath fell out while the other half remained trapped in my lungs. “Holy shit,” I whispered. “This is it, isn’t it?” I nodded my head and stared down at the innocent-looking plant. My nerves were coiling in a mixture of exhilaration as well as hatred. It was hard to think that such a small-flowered plant had the ability to bring on such heartache and devastation. Sitting there, wrapped up in a small plastic bag, were several small clippings of Hemlock. They looked naturally aged given that Isabella didn’t exactly have the chance to better preserve them in any manner.

She responded tilted her head in the seat and closed her eyes. I could feel her, how serious she was to avenge her friend. Morgan had sent over a location and a video from the scene. Watching the familiar surroundings on her screen, Helma felt a chill. It was the cemetery just outside Greenville, the final resting place of the Shade family's parents.
