Detective Cruz stood near the ruined boathouse, staring at something on the ground. An officer handed her a small plastic evidence bag. Inside it was the brass key. The one Helena had stolen. Cruz slowly looked toward the tree line beyond the estate. Someone was watching from the shadows. By the time the officers reached the trees... The watcher was gone. Only a single silver locket lay abandoned on the ground. Inside was an old photograph. One side showed a young Victor Hawthorne. The other showed Helena. Standing beside them... Was my mother. Smiling. As if they had once been family.

She snatched the ring from my hand and held it up to the moonlight. "This is hilarious!" "This piece of trash is nothing but worthless iron painted to look like bronze." She snapped the ring in two in front of everyone. The metal broke with a sharp snap. "A real Benedetto signet ring looks like this." Carmela raised her left hand. She packed some books as well which was why I only packed very little. I knew she would want to take most of her room with her.
