Sarah ran the ridgeline at a low crouch, her small paws skimming the crusted snow without a sound. She was small for a she-wolf, a runt, narrow through the chest, and light on her feet. Tonight, that smallness was an advantage. The Midnight Mountain VenomFang patrols were hunting for hulking Lycans, not a tiny gray wolf threading the underbrush.

They were both incredibly welcoming and showed me around the pack, introducing me to some of the other wolves. As we walked, I was struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Even the youngest members of the pack, like little Peggy, were eager to say hello and make me feel at home. Peggy was a little doll, with big beautiful green eyes and pigtails tied up with pink bows. She was dressed in a pretty pink dress with white sequins all over it, and her shoes were pink with white dots on them.

As they reached the end of the long corridor, they came to a dimly lit room, where they suspected the sound would have come from. There, huddled in a corner between two walls, was a small, trembling white wolf. Her silver fur shimmered in the low light, but her frame was so slight, so fragile, that it was clear she was just a child. The little wolf's soft howls were barely audible, fading to a whimper the moment her wide, frightened eyes met Britney's and Camilla’s.

Lotty is a talented wolf for a three and half-year-old. Wolves naturally grow far quicker than humans, but maturity doesn’t match our age. Except for white wolves, we grow and mature quickly. Lotty is a three-year-old with a ten-year-old maturity level.

She’s been in that pit for long enough that I’m not sure her muscles ever fully developed, let alone enough to run and jump and play. I cry when we finally pull her free and the little wolf collapses, her tongue happily panting, on the clean soil of Midnight’s soul. But when I look around at my cousin and his mate, I see that I’m in good company there. We all wipe our cheeks and continue working – me clearing what’s left of the oil from Midnight’s wolf, Jesse and our wolves drying up the rest of the pit. Until, finally, it’s all gone.
