“Where. Is. He?” Glass shattered as Thomas dropped two men trying to storm the stairs. His voice was a growl over the chaos. “Rival, make it quick!” Moreno finally broke. “Upstate! He’s hiding upstate, outside Albany, on the training grounds—they’re rebuilding!” My chest went tight. Base Two wasn’t gone. They were multiplying. I yanked the blade free, blood gushing hot across my hands. Moreno slumped, sobbing, shaking. “You should’ve kept quiet,” I whispered. Then I drove the knife up through his jaw, into his skull. His eyes went glassy before his body even sagged.

Later that night, Roman walked toward the main library. He needed to return some books. As he approached the entrance, he saw Elena walking inside alone. After dinner, I sneak back to the library. This time, not to read but to hide. I move the oldest texts I’ve been using deeper into the shelves, behind dustier books. I wedge them sideways so they’re harder to see from the front. If Theron comes back, I don’t want him finding anything easily. I pull out my worn satchel and hide my small notebook inside, wrapping it in cloth. Then I tuck the bundle beneath a loose floorboard under the second shelf, one I found weeks ago when I dropped a tray of ink.

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled Fifty Shades of Grey first (cliché, yes, but I needed an entry point), then The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice, Story of O, a slim volume called The New Topping Book just to balance it out, and two anthologies with titles like Bound Hearts and Surrender to Me. The stack felt heavy in my arms, like contraband. I carried them to the my corner and hid them under the table. I sat down, and opened the first book.

She growled deep down in her chest and ripped the paper off the door before gently pushing it open. Nueva threw the cryptic note on the desk and stilled her racing heart with deep breaths. At first glance, the room looked empty, but Nueva could sense life, so she knew they must be hiding somewhere. Although she couldn't smell the Rogues, she still had to be cautious since they knew how to camouflage their scents. She followed the rhythmic beating of pulses into the corner behind the large desk. At the bottom of a bookshelf filled with folders was a previously unnoticed hidey-hole in the wall.
