“And who, exactly, is this mate of yours?” Connor stepped forward, a hint of protectiveness in his stance. “That’s none of your business.” But I held up a hand, silencing him. I met Morgana’s gaze head-on. “My mate is Harley. She’s human.” For the first time, Morgana’s confident demeanor slipped, her eyes widening in genuine shock. “A human?” she whispered, as if the idea was absurd. “You’re telling me that an alpha werewolf like you has… bonded with a human?”

I stood frozen on the stone floor, clutching the dark fabric to my chest. Hazel and Autumn Hayes always tried to push Grayson and me together, hoping his wolf would finally accept a born-human mate. But for two painful years, every attempt had ended in cold rejection. A bitter smile touched my lips as I turned toward the grand staircase. If a simple blanket could heal two years of mate rejection, I wouldn't be drowning in so much agony every single day. Still, the thought that Grayson had spent the night searching for me made my foolish human heart swell with a faint, dangerous hope.

I stuttered. "Oh damn!. You think that's why? No. Absolutely hell no! It was because I scented you. You are my mate! But then I followed the scent to see that my Luna has a son. Despite that, I couldn't leave you stranded and being harmed by those rascals. I am not believing what I just heard right now. How am I his mate too? The flashback of when I met Mateo at the biviclub came back to me. He called me mate! The first thing he said to me when our eyes met in his room was to call me his mate. As I had been drifting off to sleep he had kissed me on the temple and whispered, "Sleep well, my love. My mate." Eyes wide I studied him. That he wouldn't hurt me and that sleeping with him had been the right move. I guess now I knew why. With his appearance, his smell, the space between us, and the mate bond had ignited a fire within me I didn't know would exist.

There was a long silence between them. Candice sat on the opposite couch in front of her son's. "That's a shocking revelation you got there, son," Candice said. Regret laced her words as she appealed, "I understand, but I'm left with no alternatives."
