“I’ve played different ice sports for over a century. Hockey now. It’s easy to hide among athletes.” He looked at Alex seriously. “I drink stored blood so I don’t hurt people. But this—” he gestured between them “—is dangerous. If hunters or the league find out… it’s over.” Alex stepped closer. “Let them worry about that,” he said. Then he kissed Jake again, slower this time. Jake melted into the kiss. They fell onto the grass together under the stars, laughing softly between kisses. For a while there was nothing but the sound of the lake and their breathing.

He just watches me with that amused expression. “Let’s go out sometime,” he says casually. I stare at him. “You’re joking.” “No.” “You’re the captain of a professional hockey team.” “And?” “And I don’t date hockey players.” His eyebrow lifts slightly. “You dated one.” “That was a mistake.” His expression shifts slightly. Then his voice lowers. “About Luca.” My chest tightens. “Please don’t.” He studies me carefully. “I can talk to the coach,” he says quietly. “We can assign him to another physio.”

Why not just do it now? I sighed loudly and started. “Well, it's not as crazy as yours. Some of us didn't join gangs.” I said sarcastically. “You wound me.” “Yeah. Err, I used to have this boyfriend earlier in college. He was….is a hockey player too. I really liked him then. Though he felt the same way about me. It turned out that he was with me basically because of a bet. Cliche right?” I laughed at my own joke. But nothing seemed funny to Liam because his face was witching up from what I could see here.

“You don’t have to be great at it. You just… let people in, little by little. On your terms.” Something in his voice made my chest ache in a way I wasn’t prepared for. I tried to laugh it off. “Careful, Michaels. You’re starting to sound like one of those broody romance novel heroes.” His lips twitched. “Do those guys play hockey?” “Not usually,” I said, grateful for the lighter turn. “They’re usually running through fields in the rain, confessing their undying love.” “I could do that,” he deadpanned. “But I’d probably slip on the ice and take you down with me.”

My stomach dropped. Hockey statistics? I hadn’t looked at a hockey stat sheet in five years. December. Rookie season. Penalty minutes. I stared at him blankly. How the hell was I supposed to know that? Zane hadn’t even made it to the NHL when we were together.
