I asked, meeting his gaze.
The wind stilled, though snow continued to drift down.
Silas' chest heaved as he stared at me. He found his voice. "Alessia."
He had never been mute. He had only chosen silence in a filthy world until he met me.
"I do," he said, his voice trembling. "My life is yours."
He went down on one knee. No ring, no flowers. From his pocket, he revealed a small wooden carving of me, smiling.
He placed it carefully in my injured palm, lowered his head, and kissed my severed finger. "Alessia. From this day forward, I am your hand and your blade, sworn to you alone."
