Johnny teased with his signature smirk when Lucas entered the meeting room. “Beta,” Lucas clapped back without blinking internally pleased when Johnny grumbled. Turning away from his best friend, he found Sierra and Bobby near the head of the table discussing something on Bobby’s tablet. Behind them, the screens they had installed showed the local and national news along with weather forecasts and video feeds across the pack territory. Lucas spared it a momentary glance but not much else. The weather looked to be finally warming up. A young woman had been found dead near a national park and all was quiet on the borders of the pack territory.

Hank offered as he thwarted a vampire’s attempt to pull off his head by biting him in the hand. When the double doors of the castle flew open and a new surge of angry castle supernatural residents poured into the great room with the intent to kill, all conversation stopped. Hank pulled a whistle from around his neck and blew it long and hard. It not only summoned a new surge of zombies to flood the great hall, but it caused the vampires to stop for a brief, stunned moment.

The survivor’s eyes suddenly shift toward me, then toward the purple flower lying on the desk beside him. His lips tremble, “ he…” a violent cough interrupts him, more blood. His body convulses. I grab his shoulder, “Stay alive.” His eyes lock onto mine, with the last strength left in him, he whispers one word, “ home.” His body goes limp, dead. Silence swallows the warehouse. Matteo slowly stands, “What does that mean?” I don't answer, because I don't know, but something inside me, something I haven't felt in years, twists.

The difference was that this was real, and it was anything but entertaining. Max hopped out of the truck as a zombie rushed up. He punched it hard enough in the stomach for it to double over. Then, he quickly pulled his gun and cracked the zombie’s skull with it. It was amazing how calm he was while doing it. As if on cue, what looked like a small army of zombies came at us from out of the dark. Eddie hopped out of the van and stood next to Max, while Evan and Angela took a stance a bit further away.
