I had been hiking the lower trails when I found it: a sleek, charcoal-colored cat with eyes like burning sulfur. It wasn’t meowing; it was simply sitting on a moss-covered stump, watching me with an intelligence that felt uncomfortably human. Around its neck was a delicate silver collar with a nameplate: Midnight. Below the name was an address just a mile down the trail.

It was a creature of nightmares all sharp angles and shadows. Razor-sharp teeth gleamed like daggers in the dim light, and its eyes burned with an eerie glow like embers burning in a forgotten fireplace.

Instead of obeying her, the cat used my shoulder as a launch pad and sprang over the table, sinking his claws into her curtains and hanging there, next to us, watching us with his terrifying beady eyes. “Your cat is scary,” I whispered. His words broke the spell of jealousy and Nikka's cat laughed inside her head. A big strong vampire was afraid of a small three-legged she-cat. It was almost as if Dmitri read her mind.

Serena continued. "I didn't ask for you to speak, Serena." Catherine replied firmly. "Okay...sorry. But seriously. Are you okay? What happened to being cool and composed?" Serena asked worriedly. Rachel let out a bitter chuckle. "Why would I be calm when we're about to die? This is literally my dream come true. I'm actually experiencing my first experience of real life horror movies. I'm scared. There is no other way to put it. I'm terrified." Catherine explained.

The echo of my own scream still rang in my ears, ridiculous and raw, but I couldn’t laugh. I was too far gone for laughter. The scare only reminded me how frayed I was, how close to the edge.
