"Damn you, Annabelle." As I continued my solitary journey, the shadows cast by the towering trees became more menacing. Each twist and turn in the road seemed to reveal hidden horrors, imaginary figures lurking just beyond my peripheral vision. My overactive imagination conjured images of malevolent entities hiding behind the gnarled trunks, their eyes glinting with malicious intent. A shiver ran down my spine as I quickened my pace, desperate to escape the oppressive darkness that enveloped me.

Paralyzed by terror, Marisol tries to scream, but her voice betrays her. The creature's approach was relentless, closing the distance with a menacing determination. As it drew nearer, so did the distorted features of its nightmarish visage grew clearer, etching an indelible horror into her consciousness.

A silent symphony of chaos. Low growls ripple through the air, deep and guttural, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. The haunting howl of wolves echoes through the streets. The spine-chilling screeches of vampires slicing through the silence. And the almost imperceptible hum of witches, their presence felt but never seen. The city is alive with the creatures of dark, a living, breathing entity, and we’re racing right through the heart of it all.

“Now you’re almost grown, and almost grown means curious, which means dangerous.” I cross my arms. “I am grown!” I shout. She doesn’t hesitate. “There are bonehounds. Starving, half-dead things with skin stretched tight over broken skeletons. They smell blood and chase it for miles. There are whisperers, creatures that climb inside your head and convince you to walk off cliffs or drink poison. There’s a woman made of smoke who turns into a bird and pecks out eyes with her beak. A man with bark for skin who collects girls and grows them into his tree.”

’ I didn’t only look devious, I felt very invincible. ‘What threats are you talking about?’ She seemed to be surprised by the talk of threats but I didn’t buy it. ‘And as for Billy and I, everybody knows that they are just rumours, nothing more.’ She talked with a rather broken voice. ‘Oh please! I wasn’t entirely sure how to respond to Lucas’ words. I just watched in horror as the scene in front of me. The sight of blood everywhere. I couldn’t figure out what was more disturbing. The dead bodies and blood or the sight of Lucas, who had transformed into some monster.

After I was done peeling the apple, I munched on it and began chatting with her, seemingly nonchalantly, like I was just talking about the weather, while telling her everything that had happened in my past life. Lacey's eyes were first filled with terror, then confusion, then shock.
