He laughs, his hands out, as if he was holding on to air. “Is Athena worth it?” “You have no idea,” he responds. “I’ll go get her,” I said. “Give me five minutes.” “Times a tickin’.” I take a few steps back, not entirely convinced that if I turn around they won't shoot me in my back. To my surprise, they let me return in one piece. Sam and Will meet me in the foyer. “Someone explain to me what happened?” I asked, referring to the hostage situation with the kids. They both looked like they were at a loss. “Was it one of the ones we rescued?”

“He’s repositioning.” “For what?” Caleb asked. “Something we can’t see yet.” Before anyone could respond, the door burst open. A scout stumbled in, blood running down his face. He collapsed against the doorframe, gasping. Finn caught him. “What happened?” “Vax,” the scout choked out. “He… took them…” My stomach dropped. “Took who?” “Hostages. Families. Young wolves. Anyone loyal to Caleb or…” He looked at me. “Or to you.”

Please…don’t shoot? “I propose a hostage exchange,” Hayden spoke up calmly yet very clearly. Everyone seemed to freeze at his unexpected proposal, and I was among one of them. A hostage exchange? What does that even mean? Who is he going to exchange me for? Sienna lowered her head, leaned toward Daniel's ear, and whispered, "We're being held hostage. There are loads of men, loads of guns, and tons of explosives here. One wrong move and we'll be blown to bits. Lucky you, huh? You'll die soon. Are you happy?"

Saint said with a rigidness in his mind. I took a deep breath and then spoke. “Have you already run a background check toward these hostages?” “Yes. These are their papers.” Saint fixed his coat before forwarding me the envelope. As I scan their personal information and the reason why they were abducted, there were nothing but normal cases. All of these were because of loans they had toward that scumbag.

The room went dead silent. I was never a rescue story. I was never a charity case. I was a living, breathing clause in a billionaire's war contract. Richard Hart had bought me from Jace to hold me over Vincenzo’s head, using my very existence as leverage to keep the Moretti cartel from crushing his company. "A hostage," I whispered, a harsh, humorless laugh tearing from my chest. "I'm just a hostage."

Gio barked. It was one of the women who responded in a shaky voice, "It's the hostage....She...She slashed her wrists.."
