The guy was about my age, tall, with a crooked smile that instantly made my stomach do a little flip.
“No harm done,” I said, smiling.
He stuck out his hand. “I’m Carter. EMT. Professional hot dog rescuer.”
I laughed, taking his hand. “Bella. Nurse. Professional...uh, eater of hot dogs.”
Carter chuckled, and just like that, the conversation flowed. He asked where I worked, and when I told him, he grinned. “I do some shifts at that hospital sometimes. Small world.”
We chatted while we waited for food, trading stories about hectic shifts and weird patient encounters. Carter was funny in an easy, unforced way, and he had this charm that made it impossible to feel awkward around him.
