Knowing he had no options and very little time, Steve kept striking the rock. Finally a spark landed on the small paper strips. Steve gently blew on it and the paper erupted into flames! Steve quickly added the tinder to the paper and it began burning. Then he placed the small pieces of bark and wood on the tinder. Once that ignited, he began adding larger chunks of the old tree. Gradually, the grotto began to warm up. Steve pulled his shoes off and placed his feet near the flames. Once they were warm, he put his shoes back on. He gathered fuel until he was simply too tired to move. He lay down near the fire and listened to the wind howl.

He throws the two sticks onto the pile and even before I can sit down, Suilen has a roaring fire. "Thanks," he says, taking the bowl of seawater from me. Placing it over the fire, Suilen then takes the second big bowl and places that bowl above the seawater, covering it. "There. These leaves are able to survive extreme heat, meaning the fire won't burn them. The fire will instead boil the seawater, turning it into steam. The steam will collect on top and once it does, we can pour it into the smaller bowl. We should have drinkable water in a few hours."

"Friction. We make fire the ancient way." It was desperate and probably stupid, but Mateo and I worked together, using the friction method we'd learned in Scouts club years ago. The jaguar circled the shelter, growling, testing the walls. "Hurry," Nivia urged, watching the jaguar through gaps in the bamboo. Smoke. Then a tiny ember. Then, finally, flame. We fed it carefully, building it up. When we had a decent torch, Mateo grabbed it and stepped outside. "Get back!" he shouted at the jaguar, waving the fire.

“And where do you expect me to get dry bark in this swampy mess?” She smiled and took a step back. Reaching into the side pocket of her jacket, she pulled out a curled, brittle lump of amber-colored gunk and pressed it under the damp kindling. Without a word, she shifted a few sticks to shield it, then nodded for him to strike again. He narrowed his eyes, but did as she suggested. Flint sparked. This time, the fire caught like magic, hissing as it licked up the twigs. Barkov blinked, disbelief apparent in his voice. “What the hell is that?”

Koldis echoes my thoughts as he catches up with me. "Got a light?" I bring out a stick of cigarette from the pack in my hand and stick it in my mouth. I watch with raised brows as fire springs from Koldis's forefinger. "Nice trick." I lean forward and squint as the butt of the cigarette lights up with orange flames. I move back, inhaling smoke into my lungs. "You taught me."

It didn't take long before I finally managed to gather ten fresh fish. I re-shifted into human form and quickly put on my clothes. I cleaned ten fresh fish with lake water and threw away the waste. Furthermore, I put the clean fish on a wide teak leaf. Thereafter, I began to arrange some tree branches to resemble a cone and stuck two large branches on each side. Then, I took two large stones and shifted the sides to create sparks that immediately ignited a pile of twigs. “It worked!” I was relieved when the sparks managed to ignite the pile of twigs I had arranged. The next step was to pierce three fish using twigs, then put them on each side of a large twig that was next to the bonfire.

He fell backwards down the stairs holding his head and screamed. The witch was behind me and I felt her as she tried to penetrate my mind. I felt the pain and it took me down to one knee. I looked up as Bryan shot another man point-blank in his face. I didn’t have much time before she overpowered me. He aimed the gun at the witch but it only clicked, the click drew her attention and she concentrated her pain on Bryan. He sank to the floor on his knees and I looked directly at her. “Ek brenna efri sál blár logi,” I shouted in my mind and the green flames in my hands burned a bright blue. I kept saying the words until the blue flames covered me and then disappeared as she started screaming as

My stomach twists. I don’t have the luxury of not being ready. I blow out a breath. “I am.” Felix nods once, then pulls a small device from his pocket, glancing at it briefly before looking back at me. “Do you know how to locate your fire?” My brow furrows. “No.” “Okay,” he says, calm and methodical. “Then we start there.” He looks at my mates and waves a, “step back,” hand at them. Surprisingly, they listen without complaint.
